Who is it for?

The D7 Visa is ideal for retirees or individuals with stable passive income (such as pensions, investments, or rental income) who wish to reside in Portugal. The D7 Visa grants residency and a path to citizenship after five years.

D7 Visa requirements

  1. Nationality: Must be a non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen.

  2. Clean criminal record: Certificate required from your country of residence.

  3. Proof of passive income:

    • Minimum of €870 per month (2025 figure) for the principal applicant.

    • Add 50% (€435/month) for a spouse or adult dependent, and 30% (€261/month) for each dependent child.

    • Acceptable sources: pensions, rental income, dividends, royalties, or other passive income (salary or active business income is not accepted).

  4. Proof of savings:

    • Portuguese bank account showing at least one year’s worth of income for all applicants (e.g., €10,440 for a single applicant, €15,660 for a couple, plus €3,132 per child).

  5. Proof of accommodation:

    • 12-month rental agreement, property deed, or a formal invitation/declaration from a host in Portugal.

  6. Health insurance:

    • Valid private health insurance covering Portugal.

  7. Portuguese NIF (Tax number):

    • Must be obtained before application.

  8. Declaration of intent:

    • Written statement expressing your intent to reside and establish tax residency in Portugal.

Application process

Prepare documents:
Obtain your NIF, open a Portuguese bank account, secure accommodation, and gather all required documents.

Apply at the consulate:
Submit your application at the Portuguese consulate in your country of residence and attend an interview if required.

Receive Visa & Travel:
If approved, receive a four-month visa and travel to Portugal.

Residence permit in Portugal:
Attend your appointment with AIMA for biometrics and receive your two-year residence permit.

Who is it for?

The D8 Visa is designed for non-EU/EEA/Swiss remote workers and freelancers who want to live and work legally in Portugal while maintaining employment or business activities outside Portugal.

D8 Visa requirements

  1. Age: 18 years or older.

  2. Nationality: Non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen.

  3. Remote work: Proof of remote employment or freelance contracts with companies/clients outside Portugal.

  4. Minimum income: At least €3,480 gross monthly income.

  5. Valid passport: Must be valid for at least six months beyond visa expiration.

  6. Proof of accommodation: 12-month rental agreement, property deed, or notarized invitation letter.

  7. Portuguese NIF (Tax Number): Required before application.

  8. Portuguese Bank account: Typically required, with a deposit of around €7,000 (single applicant).

  9. Health insurance: Valid coverage for Portugal.

  10. Clean criminal record: Apostilled and translated.

  11. Visa application form: Completed and signed.

  12. Cover letter: Explaining the purpose of stay and financial means.

  13. Supporting financial documents: Bank statements, tax returns, and contracts proving income.

Application process

Document preparation:
Obtain your NIF and open a Portuguese Bank account. Gather all required documents, including proof of income, accommodation, health insurance, and a criminal record.

Submit your application:
Apply at the Portuguese consulate or embassy in your country of residence. Pay the Visa fee and attend an interview if requested.

Visa issuance:
Once approved, receive a four-month D8 Visa allowing entry to Portugal.

Arrival & residency permit:
Enter Portugal and register with the local town hall. Attend your appointment at SEF (Immigration Service) within 30 days to finalize your residence permit and receive your residence card.

Renewal & long-term stay:
The Visa is valid for one year and can be renewed up to four times, allowing up to five years of residence. After five years, you may apply for permanent residency or citizenship.

Application process

Receive Visa & Travel:
If approved, receive a four-month D2 Visa and travel to Portugal.

Apply for residency in Portugal:
Attend your AIMA (immigration office) appointment for biometrics and submit updated documents. Receive your two-year residence permit.

Permit renewal:
Maintain business activity and financial requirements to renew your permit. After five years, you may apply for permanent residency or citizenship.
