Requirements:

  • Nationality:
    Must be a non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen.

  • Clean criminal record:
    Criminal record certificate from your country of residence (and any other country where you have lived recently), with apostille/legalisation as required.

  • Proof of passive income (Amounts 2026):

    • Main applicant: €920 per month.​

    • Spouse/Partner (+50%): €460.

    • Dependent children (+30%): €276.

  • Proof of savings (Portuguese bank account):
    Funds held in a Portuguese bank account covering at least 12 months of income for all applicants, for example:

    • Single: €11,040.​

    • Couple: €16,560.

    • Per child: €3,312.
      Higher amounts can strengthen your application and demonstrate stability.

  • Accommodation in Portugal:
    Proof of accommodation for at least one year is required for Portugal D7 Visas: (Premium Rental Search).​

  • Health insurance:
    Private health insurance covering Portugal (and the full Schengen area where required) from day one of your stay, with adequate coverage limits and no excessive exclusions.

  • Portuguese NIF (Tax number):
    A Portuguese NIF must be obtained before or alongside opening your bank account and preparing your application.

    Evidence that you have sufficient financial means to support yourself (and dependents, if applicable) and to sustain the business (bank statements, available funds, etc.).​

  • Independent professional route (freelancers):
    A contract or written proposal for services (often with Portuguese entities/clients), plus proof of qualifications where the profession is regulated.​

  • Accommodation in Portugal:
    Proof of accommodation for at least one year is required for Portugal D2 Visas: (Premium Rental Search).​

  • Health insurance:
    Valid medical insurance covering the full stay (until access to the public system).​

  • Criminal record certificate:
    Clean criminal record certificate, usually legalized/apostilled and translated per consulate rules.​

  • Standard visa documents:
    Completed national visa application, passport, photos, and any additional consulate-specific forms.​
